Sony VAIO VGN-FW390
The Sony VAIO VGN-FW198UH was one of the first laptops to showcase a 16:9 aspect ratio display, a beautiful 16-inch widescreen that fit the lines of the 1080p format to a T. (It's a format that's commonly paired with high-end LCD panels.) But as the field of 16-inch laptops grew, so did the bargains that reflected a new shopping trend in this troubled economy. That said, the latest in Sony's
Sony VAIO VGN-NW120J (Staples)
Sony's VAIO notebooks have long been at the cutting edge of style, and the VGN-NW120J continues the trend. This sleek mainstream laptop features a cool textured finish and a nice, colorful 15.5-inch widescreen display, but at $799.98 (list), it is a bit more expensive than competing systems that offer similar components and features.

Sony VAIO VPC-W11XX
Despite all the tell-tale signs that point to one—an Atom processor, small screen, and an undersized keyboard—Sony refused to call the LifeStyle PC a netbook. So officially, the company never launched one. But after watching this diminutive category seduce one laptop manufacturer after another, Sony couldn't help but fall weak at the knees, too. This time, it admits that the VAIO VPC-W11XX ($500 direct) is a netbook, and although the beautifully done design and a 1,366-by-768 resolution are admirable netbook qualities, it fails to address all the other things that have made netbooks like the Toshiba mini NB205 and Asus EeePC 1000HE (both Editors' Choices) so successful. A severely undersized keyboard and a bloated price—that merely nets you a 3-cell battery—make this netbook hard to recommend.

Sony VAIO VGN-NW270F/S
Sony has always placed an emphasis on design, so it's no surprise that the Sony VAIO VGN-NW270F/S ($799 from Staples) stands out from the mainstream laptop crowd with its unique, textured plastic chassis. The VAIO NW270F/S features an extra-wide 15.5-inch widescreen display that's a beauty for both movie watching and Excel spreadsheeting. Also helping separate the VAIO NW270F/S from the sub-$1,000 laptop pack is its ability to play Blu-ray discs. Aside from its funky design and BD-ROM drive, however, the Windows 7-equipped VAIO NW270 is a fairly typical mainstream laptop, delivering a configuration and performance that are in line with the competition.
Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS
Design
There's no need to redesign an ultraportable that's this good looking, which is why Sony left the chassis alone in the new Z116GXS. It's the same reason why the well-crafted Lenovo ThinkPad X200 ($1,199 direct) had left its design untouched. The Z116GXS is wrapped in carbon fiber and magnesium metals, though its incredibly scant, 3-pound frame belies its surprising sturdiness. The 4.6-pound Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch ($1,199 direct) and 3.8-pound HP ProBook 5310m ($899 direct) have a similar footprint but weigh a whole lot more than the Sony Z116GXS. Even the cracker-thin ASUS UL30A-A1 (3.9 lbs) isn't as easy on the scales.

Sony VAIO VPC-EB13FXBI
Sony laptops have always been a good-looking bunch, but they have typically carried a price premium. Not anymore: The Sony's VAIO VPC-EB13FXBI (known hereafter as the EB Series), available at Costco for $799.99 (list) fuses solid construction and quality components with Sony's style. This multimedia computer will turn heads, but it's not just about what's on the outside. The Sony VAIO EB Series has an outstanding complement of components that includes an Intel 2.26GHz Core i5 processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and a roomy 500GB hard drive. Its 15.5-inch LCD is big enough for multitasking and watching video, yet it's not so large that the laptop is ungainly to carry. As with many value laptops, you'll have to settle for integrated graphics. Our only serious complaint is that the small 39Wh battery delivers lackluster away-from-AC power.

Sony VAIO VPC-EA36FMW
The Sony VAIO VPC-EA36FMW ($799.99 list, at Best Buy) is a well-designed, well-rounded laptop that nearly stands up to the Asus U45Jc-A1 ($867 street, 4.5 stars), the Editors' Choice in the mainstream laptop category. Both models feature the same Core i3 processor, 4GB of memory, 500GB hard drive, and 14-inch display, but, otherwise, they serve up different designs and feature sets. The Asus U45Jc-A1 earns points for its sleek and solid metal frame, switchable graphics, and long-lasting battery. The VPC-EA36FMW's uses a plastic chassis, but it supplies a number of useful features you won't find on the Asus, including Intel Wireless Display (WiDi), WiMax, and Blu-ray drive. Depending on what you need or desire from your next laptop, we enthusiastically recommend either the Sony VAIO VPC-EA36FMW or Asus U45Jc-A1 among mainstream laptops, with a slight edge given to the Asus for its superior design and battery life.
