A new cheap tethering app has returned to the iPhone App Store, requiring no monthly fee to use -- at least until it gets banished by Apple.

iPhone Repair Policy Helps Thieves, Report Claims

Apple's policy of replacing broken iPhones is playing into the hands of criminals who steal the handsets, damage them and take them to an Apple Store to be replaced, it has been claimed. In an op-ed piece for the Reuters news agency, U.S.-based consumer rights journalist Mitch Lipka says that Apple's well-intentioned customer service plan, in which the owner of a broken handset doesn't have to be present in order for Apple to take it in for repairs, is being abused.

Apple Reclaims Top Brand Spot After iPhone 4S Launch, Jobs' Death

Apple reclaimed the top spot in a brand listing by collecting an estimated $900 million worth of traditional media, social media and Twitter coverage in the fourth quarter of 2011, a measurement company said today. New York-based General Sentiment, which tracks the on-line coverage of 100 companies each quarter, said that Apple's return to the No. 1 spot was fuelled by media reports and individuals' comments about the iPhone 4S and the death of former CEO Steve Jobs -- events that took place in the final three months of 2011.

Apple unseated Google as the brand that amassed the most coverage; Google had held the first position for the two quarters prior.

"Apple had the best numbers since the first quarter of 2011, when it released the iPad 2, Verizon began selling the iPhone and Jobs took a third leave of absence," said Greg Artzt, co-founder and chief strategy officer of General Sentiment.

Apple Number One Smartphone Vendor Again, Say Research Firms

Apple has emerged as the number one smartphone vendor worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2011, by a small margin, after losing ground to Samsung in the previous quarter, research firms Strategy Analytics and IHS iSuppli said. But the Korean giant has emerged as the market leader for the first time in 2011, the research firms said Thursday. Samsung shipped nearly 100 million smartphones during the year. Samsung had a close to 20 percent share for the year, in comparison to Apple's 19 percent share, according to Strategy Analytic.

Apple may be preparing to launch a redesigned iPhone 5 with a 4-inch display over the summer, according to the latest unconfirmed report from 9to5Mac.The story cites an unnamed employee at Foxconn, which manufactures products for Apple. Motorola has decided to do battle with Apple in court-- this time concerning the iPhone 4s and (by some extension) Apple's iCloud service. Motorola claims that Apple violates six of its mobile patents are with the iPhone 4s. If you're hankering for a shiny new iPhone 4S, you won't have to wait much longer. Ship times for the smartphone have dropped to between three and five business days,Electronista discovered.
